Short answer

If your YouTube channel was hacked and then terminated, run two tracks in strict order. First, recover and secure the Google Account through Google’s free recovery. Second, appeal the termination through YouTube’s form with proof of the hack: a timeline, Google’s security emails and a list of what the attacker changed. YouTube promises no reinstatement.

Key takeaways

  • YouTube can terminate a channel for a single case of severe abuse, such as spam – which is why one scam stream by a hacker can end a channel without prior strikes.
  • YouTube’s hacked-channel help says to recover the Google Account first and then appeal through its form; an incomplete recovery can get the appeal rejected.
  • As of October 2026, you have up to one year to appeal a termination and only two appeals within that year.
  • YouTube’s hacked-channel support only covers incidents from the past 9 months, so report the hack immediately.
  • Appeals Centre Europe explicitly excludes hacked accounts, so EU creators should rely on YouTube’s own appeal and complaint routes first.

This is one of the most unfair situations on YouTube: someone takes over your channel, runs a scam on it – and the channel is terminated for what they did. If your YouTube channel was hacked and terminated, you are dealing with two separate problems with two separate owners: Google decides on the account, YouTube decides on the channel. This page gives you the two-track plan, the evidence that proves the takeover and an appeal structure you can use today.

Why do hacked YouTube channels get terminated?

Hacked channels get terminated because YouTube enforces against the content on a channel, not against the person who happened to be logged in. The pattern creators report most often: the attacker renames the channel to look like a well-known company or crypto project, swaps the picture and runs a livestream promoting a fake “giveaway” or investment. Other attackers mass-upload spam or link to malware.

That content breaks the Spam Policy, which explicitly covers scams, and often the impersonation rules too. YouTube can terminate a channel for a single case of severe abuse – its own examples include spam – without any warning or strike first. So by the time you regain access, the channel may already be gone, and the termination email usually names a policy such as spam, scams or impersonation rather than mentioning a hack. Our guides on the Spam, deceptive practices and scams policy and on terminations without strikes explain those rules in detail.

What is the two-track recovery plan?

The two-track plan means you fix the Google Account first (Track A) and only then fight the termination (Track B). YouTube’s own hacked-channel help is built the same way: recover the account, then appeal through the form – and it warns that an appeal may be rejected if the account recovery is incomplete.

Two-track plan: Track A recovers the Google Account, Track B appeals the termination only after Track A is complete TRACK A · GOOGLE ACCOUNT (free, decided by Google) 1 Recover the account Google account recovery 2 Lock the attacker out Password, 2SV, sessions 3 Re-check recovery info Changes can take 7 days GATE: account fully secure TRACK B · YOUTUBE CHANNEL (decided by YouTube) 4 Secure the evidence Emails, timeline, screenshots 5 Appeal via the form Up to 1 year · 2 appeals 6 Decision by email No fixed review time Report the hack now: YouTube’s hacked-channel support covers only the past 9 months
Step 4 can start on day one – collecting evidence never hurts. Step 5 waits until Track A is complete.

How do you secure the Google Account before you appeal?

You secure the account by recovering it through Google, removing every way the attacker could get back in, and checking again a week later. Only then is your appeal credible – and only then can a reinstated channel stay yours.

  1. Recover the account through GoogleUse Google’s account recovery from a device and location you normally use. There is no limit on attempts, so if one fails, try again with more precise answers.
  2. Clean the device firstIf the hack started with a downloaded file, scan or reset that computer before you sign in again – otherwise the attacker may simply copy your new session.
  3. Change the password and turn on 2-Step VerificationPrefer a passkey or a hardware security key over text messages if you can.
  4. Sign out every other sessionRemove devices you don’t recognize in your Google Account’s security settings.
  5. Remove the attacker’s recovery details and channel accessUnknown recovery phones or emails, unknown channel owners or managers. If Google warns you about suspicious recovery details, you have 30 days from that warning to review them.
  6. Check again after seven daysGoogle notes that changed recovery details can take up to 7 days to take full effect. Re-check everything before you rely on it.
Careful

Don’t appeal yet if you still see sign-ins you don’t recognize, if the recovery details keep changing back, or if you haven’t cleaned the device the attack started on. An appeal from an account that is still compromised is easy to reject – and you have very few of them.

Our YouTube channel security checklist covers each step in more detail.

How do you prove your YouTube channel was hacked?

You prove a hack with a timeline that a reviewer can check against YouTube’s and Google’s own records. A human reviews termination appeals, according to YouTube – so give that person dates, not feelings. Collect the evidence before you write a single word of the appeal:

  • Google’s security emails: new sign-in, password changed, recovery phone or email changed – with date and time. Don’t delete them.
  • Your timeline: when you last had normal access, when you noticed the hack, when you regained control (state your time zone).
  • What the attacker changed: screenshots or notes of the new name, picture, handle, livestream title or uploads, if you still have them or your viewers sent them.
  • Proof of your normal activity: your typical upload pattern and topics, which look nothing like the scam content.
  • The entry point, if known: the phishing email or “sponsorship” offer and the file it carried, kept but not reopened.
  • Your clean-up actions: what you changed after recovery, with dates.
Good to know

Once a channel is terminated, you can no longer download its YouTube content, although other Google data generally remains downloadable. Save what you can reach today, and use our 48-hour evidence checklist so nothing important disappears while you wait.

How do you write the appeal for a hacked and terminated channel?

Write a short, factual appeal that does three things: states that the account was compromised and when, shows that the violating content came from the attacker, and confirms that you have recovered and secured the account. YouTube’s hacked-channel help sends you to its appeal form for this; the form requires you to sign in, which is another reason Track A must be finished first.

Keep it calm and specific. Don’t threaten legal action, don’t apologize for content you didn’t create, and don’t paste long stories. Here is a free sample you can adapt:

Template: hacked-channel appeal (short version, excerpt)
My channel [channel URL or channel ID] was taken over by an unauthorized person on [date, time zone]. I lost access when [the password and recovery email were changed – Google sent security alerts on (dates)].

The content that led to the termination – [the livestream / uploads on (date)] – was created by the attacker, not by me. It does not match anything I have published in [number] years on this channel.

I recovered my Google Account on [date] through Google’s account recovery. I changed the password, turned on 2-Step Verification, signed out all other sessions and removed the unknown recovery details and channel managers.

I ask you to review the termination in light of this account compromise and to restore my channel.

As of October 2026, YouTube’s Help Center gives you up to one year from the termination to appeal, but only two appeals within that year, plus a further limit per termination. It may also send automated replies if you appeal again after a review or exceed the limit. There is no official review time – Studio may show an anticipated review time, and the decision arrives by email. Our guide on how long YouTube appeals take explains what to expect.

If you want the complete version – the long appeal for email and escalation, plus the evidence checklist and deadline calculator – the hacked-channel template is part of the Appeal Kit. If the channel is your income, the Reinstatement Playbook adds the escalation map and the country routes for the case that your first appeal is rejected. Both are self-help guides with a 30-day no-questions refund – nobody asks for your login.

What if your hacked channel’s appeal is rejected?

A rejection is not automatically the end, but your options narrow. If you still have an appeal left within the year, only use it with genuinely new evidence – a second appeal that repeats the first is likely to get an automated reply. If your channel had Creator Support, use that channel to explain the hack; TeamYouTube on X helps with some questions, but YouTube’s help pages disagree on whether it handles hacked channels at all.

In the EU, the Digital Services Act requires YouTube to offer a free internal complaint route for at least six months after a decision to suspend or terminate an account. Be aware that Appeals Centre Europe explicitly excludes hacked accounts from its out-of-court dispute settlement. Whether other certified dispute bodies accept hacked-account cases is not published, so ask before you file. If the channel stays terminated, the official fresh start is Second Chances, available one year after the termination at the earliest for eligible creators. The full sequence is in YouTube appeal rejected: your remaining options.

Can you start a new channel while you wait?

No – not while the old channel is terminated. YouTube’s termination rules prohibit using, possessing or creating other channels after a termination, including channels where you appear prominently. A “temporary” channel can be terminated as circumvention, and it can make your hack story look less credible. Our guide Can you make a new YouTube channel after termination? explains what is and isn’t allowed.

Which mistakes cost hacked creators their appeal?

  • Appealing in the first panicked hour, before the Google Account is secure.
  • Paying a “recovery agent” or sharing your password, codes or screen with anyone – Google doesn’t work with recovery services.
  • Writing a long, emotional appeal without dates, or blaming YouTube instead of explaining the hack.
  • Sending several appeals in a row – appeals are limited and repeats may only get automated replies.
  • Deleting Google’s security emails, or wiping the infected computer before noting what happened.
  • Opening a new channel “just for now” – that is circumvention.
  • Waiting months – YouTube’s hacked-channel support only reaches back 9 months.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get my YouTube channel back if a hacker got it terminated?

It is possible, but not guaranteed. YouTube’s hacked-channel help says you can appeal through its form after recovering your Google Account, and that the appeal may be rejected if the recovery is incomplete. Your best chance is one clear appeal with a timeline and evidence of the takeover, sent only once the attacker is fully locked out.

Can I appeal before I recover my Google Account?

You shouldn’t. The appeal form requires you to sign in, and YouTube warns that appeals can be rejected when account recovery is incomplete. Appeals are also limited – as of October 2026, two within one year of the termination – so spending one while the attacker may still have access wastes a shot you might need later.

What evidence proves my YouTube channel was hacked?

The strongest evidence is Google’s own security emails about new sign-ins, password changes or new recovery details, plus a precise timeline of when you lost and regained access. Add screenshots of the renamed channel or scam stream if you have them, a list of uploads you didn’t make, and – if malware was involved – the email and file that started it.

Will I get my AdSense earnings back after a hack-related termination?

YouTube says terminated channels in the YouTube Partner Program are no longer entitled to revenue and that it may withhold unpaid earnings. YouTube publishes nothing specific about earnings when a hacked channel is reinstated. Mention the financial impact briefly in your appeal, but focus on proving the takeover – that is what the reviewer decides on.

Can I start a new channel while my appeal is pending?

No. After a termination, YouTube prohibits using, possessing or creating other channels, which is called circumvention. A new channel can be terminated too and can undermine your appeal. The only official fresh start is the Second Chances program, which opens one year after the termination at the earliest.

Does Appeals Centre Europe handle hacked YouTube accounts?

No. Appeals Centre Europe lists hacked accounts among the cases it does not accept. EU creators can still use YouTube’s internal complaint system, which the Digital Services Act requires to be free and open for at least six months after the decision. Whether other certified dispute bodies accept hacked-account cases is not published, so ask them before filing.
