Short answer

A terminated YouTube channel is permanently removed, but not always gone for good. Save your evidence first, never open a new channel, then file one specific appeal in YouTube Studio – you have up to a year and, as of October 2026, two appeals. After a rejection come escalation, country routes and Second Chances after 12 months.

Key takeaways

  • As of October 2026, YouTube allows appeals up to one year after a termination, with at most two appeals in that year – treat the first one as your only shot.
  • Creating, using or even possessing another channel after a termination counts as circumvention and can get every other channel terminated too.
  • Once a channel is terminated, its YouTube content can no longer be downloaded – save everything you can still reach before you do anything else.
  • Every official route back is free: the appeal, TeamYouTube, Creator Support, EU dispute bodies such as Appeals Centre Europe and the Second Chances program.
  • Second Chances lets eligible creators request a new channel one year after the termination – it does not restore old videos or subscribers, and copyright terminations are excluded.

Seeing “YouTube channel terminated” in your inbox is a gut punch. One policy name, a link to the guidelines, often no video named and no person to ask. Before you do anything, take a breath: the next 48 hours decide which doors stay open. This guide gives you the order that matters – what a termination really means, what to save today, which way back fits your reason, every deadline on one timeline, what is free, and the five mistakes that make things worse.

The 60-second answer

1. Do not create a new channel. 2. Save the email, screenshots and every file you still have. 3. Find the exact policy you were terminated under. 4. Write one specific, factual appeal in YouTube Studio within days, not hours – you have up to a year, but only two appeals (as of October 2026). 5. If it fails: escalate, use the routes your country gives you, and keep Second Chances in mind for month 12.

What does it mean when a YouTube channel is terminated?

A terminated YouTube channel is a channel that YouTube has permanently removed for breaking its Community Guidelines or Terms of Service: all of its videos come down, you lose the Studio dashboard and its revenue, and you are barred from running other channels. It is the most severe enforcement step YouTube has.

YouTube’s Help article on channel terminations names three grounds, paraphrased: repeated violations across any kind of content, a single case of severe abuse (YouTube’s examples include predatory behavior, spam and pornography), and a channel dedicated to a policy violation, such as hate speech, harassment or impersonation. Three Community Guidelines strikes within 90 days may also lead to removal – since February 2025 the Help Center says “may”, not “will”. Copyright has its own three-strike system.

What happens next, according to YouTube’s Help Center (as of October 2026):

  • You get an email explaining the reason. Sometimes you only see the notice when you sign in to YouTube Studio.
  • You lose the Studio dashboard, but you can still sign in to see the termination information and start an appeal.
  • Revenue stops. Partner Program members are no longer entitled to earn revenue, and YouTube may withhold unpaid earnings.
  • Your uploads are locked. You can no longer download your YouTube content, but you can still download your other Google data.
  • You may not run any other channel – not a new one, not a borrowed one, not one where you regularly appear.

Banned, removed, suspended or terminated – is there a difference?

Yes. “Terminated” is YouTube’s official word for a channel that has been permanently removed; “suspended” usually means something is limited but still exists; “banned” is the colloquial term. Each status has its own appeal and its own deadline.

  • Terminated (many emails say “removed”): the channel is gone, every video is down, and only a successful appeal brings it back.
  • Suspended or temporarily restricted: the channel still exists, but features are limited for a while – one week without uploads after a first Community Guidelines strike, two weeks after a second within 90 days; a Partner Program suspension stops the money and leaves the videos online. YouTube also uses “suspended” loosely for terminations, so look at what is actually gone. Our guide to a suspended YouTube channel helps you tell them apart.
  • Banned: the colloquial term. Forums use it for anything from a strike to a termination; YouTube’s termination page and emails speak of terminated or removed channels.
  • Google account disabled: a different, account-level status. Google – not YouTube – has blocked the whole account, including Gmail, and runs its own appeal with up to two attempts; see Google account disabled.

The table gives each status its main route back; the full comparison, including “deleted” and “restricted”, is in our glossary entry terminated vs. suspended vs. banned.

YouTube account terminated vs. channel terminated: which one hit you?

A channel termination removes one YouTube channel; an account termination reaches every channel the account owns – and if Google disabled the Google account itself, Gmail and everything else signed in with it. Which one you got decides where you appeal.

  • Channel terminated. The email speaks of “your channel” and names a YouTube policy. You can still sign in to Google and to YouTube Studio, where the notice and “Begin Review” appear. Other channels may be untouched – but the circumvention rule now applies to them.
  • YouTube account terminated. The email speaks of “your account”, or several channels went down at once. After three copyright strikes, for example, YouTube terminates the account along with any associated channels, and you cannot create new ones. You still appeal through Studio or the signed-in fallback form.
  • Google account disabled. You cannot sign in to Gmail or any Google service, and the message comes from Google, not YouTube. This is a separate, account-level status with its own appeal – up to two attempts – that is not filed in Studio. Start with Google account disabled: what to do.

Not sure? Try Gmail. If it works, you are dealing with a YouTube decision. Then check your Brand Accounts and any channel you manage – related channels are often terminated together.

Why was my YouTube channel terminated?

Most likely for spam: according to Google’s Transparency Report, YouTube removed 2,732,395 channels in Q2 2026, and 84.5% of them fell under its spam, deceptive practices and scams policies. Nudity and sexual content, child safety and harmful or dangerous content follow far behind.

Those numbers need context. They count channels, not people – many removed channels belong to automated spam networks with hundreds of accounts. For the full year 2025, Google reports 15,875,020 removed channels; the often-quoted “12 million” covered only January to September 2025. Google also changed how it counts in Q2 2025, so before-and-after comparisons across that quarter are unreliable.

For your own case, the email matters more than the statistics. It usually names the policy – for example “Spam, deceptive practices and scams” – but rarely the specific video or behavior. That gap is why so many appeals miss the point. Paste your email into the free termination reason decoder to see what your policy usually targets, or read the full list of YouTube termination reasons explained.

Good to know

YouTube restructured its spam policy in late May/early June 2026 without an announcement. It now explicitly covers AI-driven mass production, scraped content, private and unlisted videos, and coordinated networks of channels. If you run an automation, compilation or AI-voice channel, read your policy in its current version, not a 2024 summary.

What should you do in the first 48 hours?

In the first 48 hours, secure your evidence, identify the exact reason and avoid anything irreversible – the appeal can wait a few days, but evidence and options cannot.

  1. Save the termination email properlyKeep the original message, not just a screenshot: in Gmail, use “Show original” and save it as a file. Note the date and time – your deadlines count from here.
  2. Screenshot the notice in YouTube StudioSign in on a computer with the terminated channel’s Google account. Open the termination notice and capture the reason it shows. Do not submit an appeal yet.
  3. Secure everything you can still reachYour other Google data through Google Takeout, local master files and project files, AdSense statements, sponsor contracts, music and footage licenses, and a list of your uploads. The 48-hour evidence checklist walks you through it hour by hour.
  4. Identify the exact policy and what it targetsWrite down the policy name exactly as YouTube states it. Your appeal has to answer that policy, not the termination in general.
  5. Rule out a hackUnknown uploads, crypto “giveaway” livestreams, changed recovery details or login alerts point to a hijacking. Then the Google account comes first – see hacked, then terminated: the two-track recovery plan.
  6. Tell the people who depend on you – brieflySponsors, editors, your community. A calm, factual note now prevents rumors. Do not attack YouTube staff publicly; it never helps a review.

Which way back fits your termination?

The right way back depends on what your termination email says: spam, circumvention, copyright and hacked channels each need a different first move. Start with the branch that matches your email.

Decision tree: which way back fits your YouTube terminationFive branches by email wording – copyright strikes, circumvention or related channel, spam, hacked, other policies – each with its first move, followed by escalation, country routes and Second Chances. What does your termination email say? 3 copyrightstrikes Circumvention orrelated channel Spam, deceptivepractices & scams Hacked, thenterminated Other policy orthree strikes File a counternotification or askfor a retraction Explain the linkwith facts. Escalate, then use your country’s routes (EU: DSA · India: GAC). From month 12: Second Chances – a new channel, if eligible (not after copyright terminations). Never: a new channel before then, paid “insiders”, or sharing your password.
The first move depends on the reason in your email. Everything after the appeal is the same ladder for everyone – only the country routes differ.

Whichever branch you are on, the clock runs the same way. Is a YouTube termination permanent? walks through what is still possible from day 0 to day 365.

How long do you have to act?

As of October 2026, you have up to one year from the termination date to appeal, with at most two appeals in that year – but several other routes run on much shorter clocks, so the one-year window is a ceiling, not a plan.

The 365-day timeline after a YouTube terminationDay 0 to 2: save evidence. Week 1: first appeal. Months 1 to 6: EU complaint and dispute bodies, India grievance route. All dates count from the termination decision. Rules as of October 2026.
Your clocks after a termination. The appeal window is the longest – the EU and India routes are much shorter.
  • The termination appeal: up to one year, two appeals within that year, plus a further limit per termination. TeamYouTube’s own FAQ from November 2025 still said only one appeal per termination is reviewed – so write the first one as if it were the only one. Repeat submissions can now get automated replies.
  • EU residents: the Digital Services Act (DSA) obliges YouTube to accept complaints for at least six months after a decision, free of charge. Appeals Centre Europe only takes decisions that are at most six months old.
  • India: YouTube’s Grievance Officer must acknowledge a complaint within 24 hours and resolve it within 7 days; you then have 30 days to go to the Grievance Appellate Committee (GAC).
  • Second Chances: eligible creators can request a new channel no earlier than one year after the termination.

The free appeal deadline calculator turns these rules into real dates for your country, with a calendar file.

Careful

“You have 21 days to appeal” is a myth that keeps circulating. The 21 days apply to removals from the YouTube Partner Program, not to channel terminations.

Which five mistakes close doors in the first 48 hours?

The five mistakes that do the most damage are all irreversible: a second channel, a rushed appeal, deleting things, trusting a “recovery agent” and letting evidence disappear.

  • Opening a new or “backup” channel. This is circumvention, the fastest way to make things worse. The ban covers new channels and any channel in which you are repeatedly or prominently featured – YouTube can terminate them and reclaim revenue connected to them.
  • Firing off an emotional appeal in the first hour. With two appeals per year, burning the first one on anger and no facts is expensive. A specific appeal written on day 3 beats a furious one written at minute 10.
  • Deleting videos, the channel or your Google account. Deleting content does not remove strikes, it destroys evidence – and creators who deleted their channel or Google account are not offered Second Chances.
  • Giving your login or money to a “recovery agent”. Nobody legitimate needs your password, and nobody can buy you a reinstatement. Google says it does not work with any service that claims to provide account or password support.
  • Letting evidence disappear. Once terminated, your YouTube uploads can no longer be downloaded. What you do not save now may be gone when you need it for a complaint.
YouTube’s wording

After a termination you are “prohibited from using, possessing, or creating any other YouTube channels”.

Scam warning

After a termination you will be contacted by “recovery agents” on Instagram, X, Telegram and Fiverr. If anyone asks for your login, a “verification fee” or promises a guaranteed unban through “contacts at YouTube”, walk away. Check any recovery offer in 60 seconds →

How do you appeal, and what if the appeal is rejected?

You appeal in YouTube Studio on a computer: sign in with the terminated channel’s account, click “Begin Review” under the termination notice, check the reason, click “Start Appeal”, add a contact email and your explanation, and submit.

If Studio does not work, YouTube’s Help Center points to a fallback form on Google’s support site (you must be signed in). After submitting, Studio shows a confirmation and an anticipated review time; the decision arrives by email. YouTube says a human reviews appealed decisions case by case – but a reviewer still has to see, quickly, why the named policy does not fit your channel. The step-by-step guide to appealing a YouTube termination covers the structure, the evidence and the seven most common reasons appeals fail.

A rejection is not always the end. Depending on where you live, these routes remain:

  • Everywhere: a second appeal, only with genuinely new facts; escalation through Creator Support (if eligible) or TeamYouTube; Second Chances from month 12.
  • EU: a free internal complaint under Article 20 of the DSA and a certified out-of-court dispute body under Article 21. Google states it is not bound by those bodies’ decisions.
  • India: the Grievance Officer, then the Grievance Appellate Committee, whose decisions the platform must follow.
  • United Kingdom: no DSA, but contract claims in local courts are possible; the one UK creator case we found failed on procedure.
  • United States: courts have consistently dismissed creators’ lawsuits over terminations, mostly because of Section 230 and YouTube’s broad discretion in its Terms.
What the law says – and where

Our own story shows how much location matters: a German news channel was terminated without warning for “spam, deceptive practices and scams”; a German court granted an injunction 13 days later, without a hearing, and the platform had to bear the costs. This route exists in Germany – not in the US. Read what to do after a rejected appeal and the country-by-country legal options after a YouTube termination. This is general information, not legal advice; talk to a licensed attorney in your jurisdiction about your situation.

How do you get a banned YouTube channel unbanned?

There is no “unban” button, shortcut or back channel. A banned – that is, terminated – channel comes back only if YouTube reverses its own decision, and the route to that decision is the appeal in YouTube Studio. Everything else on offer is either a free official route or a scam.

What “getting unbanned” looks like, as of October 2026:

  1. Find the appeal where it livesIt has no public link: sign in to Studio on a computer with the terminated channel’s Google account, click “Begin Review”, then “Start Appeal”. If Studio fails, use YouTube’s signed-in fallback form – see where to find the YouTube appeal form.
  2. Answer the named policy with checkable factsWho runs the channel, how the videos are made, why the pattern YouTube saw does not fit.
  3. Wait for the email, do not resubmit blindlyThere is no published processing time, repeat submissions can get automated replies, and you have two appeals in the year.

Anyone selling an “unban” – an “insider”, a “recovery agent” in your DMs, anyone who needs your password or a “verification fee” – is selling something that does not exist. Google says it does not work with any service that claims to provide account or password support. Run any offer through the free recovery service scam checker.

Can you really get a terminated YouTube channel back?

Sometimes – but only YouTube, or in some countries a court or dispute body, can reverse a termination, and YouTube itself says most termination decisions are upheld.

In its November 2025 FAQ, TeamYouTube wrote that the vast majority of termination decisions were upheld after review, with only a handful of nuanced cases overturned. That is honest, and it is why the quality of your first appeal matters so much: a reviewer who sees a specific, checkable explanation has something to work with; a reviewer who sees anger or a generic template does not. If the old channel cannot be restored, the next step is what happens after a YouTube termination – your money, your videos and how to protect what is left.

Be wary of anyone who promises certainty. Before you pay anyone, read whether YouTube channel recovery services are legit – and remember that no one can guarantee a reinstatement, including us.

What Reddit threads get right – and wrong – about terminations

Reddit gets the emotional reality right and the rules wrong surprisingly often. The threads are full of people who have been through a termination, and the best advice in them matches what YouTube’s own Help Center says. The worst advice is a few years out of date and can cost you an appeal or get a second channel terminated.

What the good threads get right:

  • Act fast on evidence, not on the appeal. Save the email, screenshots and your files on day one; the appeal can wait until you know which policy you are answering.
  • One specific appeal beats five generic ones. Name the policy, answer it with facts a reviewer can check, and treat the first appeal as the only one.
  • Rule out a hack and linked channels first. Many “random” terminations turn out to be a hijacked account or a connected channel.

What keeps getting repeated – and is wrong as of October 2026:

What you will readWhat is actually true
“You have 21 days to appeal.”The 21 days apply to Partner Program suspensions. For a termination you have up to one year, with two appeals in that year.
“Just make a new channel and start over.”That is circumvention. The only official new start is Second Chances, from one year after the termination.
“If they reject you, wait two weeks and resubmit.”This comes from an old appeal form. Today appeals are limited, and repeat submissions can get automated replies.
“Tag TeamYouTube and they will unban you.”TeamYouTube does not handle disagreements with policy decisions. Some reviews have followed public posts, according to media reports – there is no right to one.
“Second Chances gives you your channel back.”It gives you a new, empty channel. Old videos and subscribers do not come back; you may re-upload videos that follow the rules.
“YouTube banned 12 million creators.”About 12.5 million channels were removed from January to September 2025, most of them spam. Channels are not creators.
“This service has contacts at YouTube.”No legitimate service does. Insider claims and password requests are the classic signs of a scam.

Use Reddit for what it is good at – knowing you are not alone and spotting patterns – and check every rule against YouTube’s Help Center before you act on it. If your thread is about a “ban wave”, why so many YouTube channels are being terminated shows what the published data actually says.

Frequently asked questions

How can I get my terminated YouTube channel back?

Through YouTube’s appeal, in the right order: save your evidence, identify the exact policy named in the email, then sign in to YouTube Studio on a computer, click “Begin Review” and “Start Appeal”, and answer that policy with facts a reviewer can check. As of October 2026 you have up to one year and two appeals. There is no paid shortcut, and nobody can guarantee the outcome – including us.

Is it possible to recover a terminated YouTube channel?

Sometimes. Only YouTube can reinstate a channel – after an appeal, or in some countries after a complaint, a dispute body or a court. YouTube says most termination decisions are upheld, so your first appeal has to be specific and backed by facts. If the old channel stays gone, eligible creators can request a new channel through Second Chances one year after the termination.

Why does it say my YouTube account has been terminated?

YouTube removed your channel or account for what it considers repeated violations, a single severe violation or a channel dedicated to breaking a policy. The email usually names the policy, for example spam, deceptive practices and scams, but rarely the exact video. Sign in to YouTube Studio on a computer to see the termination notice and the appeal option.

Can I make a new YouTube channel after my channel was terminated?

Not on your own. After a termination you are prohibited from using, possessing or creating other YouTube channels, and new channels are usually found and terminated as circumvention. The only official way to a new channel is Second Chances: eligible creators can request one in YouTube Studio from one year after the termination date.

How long do I have to appeal a YouTube channel termination?

As of October 2026, YouTube's Help Center allows appeals up to one year after the termination, with at most two appeals within that year and a further limit per termination. Do not wait: evidence disappears, and some routes, such as dispute bodies in the EU, only accept decisions that are less than six months old.

Can you appeal a YouTube account termination?

Yes. Whether YouTube terminated one channel or your whole YouTube account with every channel on it, the appeal runs through YouTube Studio or YouTube’s signed-in fallback form – within one year and with two appeals, as of October 2026. If Google disabled your entire Google account instead, so that Gmail no longer works either, that is a different status with its own appeal and up to two attempts.

What happens to my money when my YouTube channel is terminated?

Partner Program members are no longer entitled to earn revenue from a terminated channel, and YouTube may withhold unpaid earnings and refund advertisers or viewers where appropriate. That is a may, not an automatic loss. Keep your AdSense statements and payment history, because they matter for any later complaint.

Should I pay a recovery service to get my channel back?

Be very careful. Nobody can guarantee a reinstatement, and nobody legitimate needs your password. Google says it does not work with any service that claims to provide account or password support. Every official route is free; paid help can only prepare you to use those routes better.
