Short answer
YouTube’s nudity and sexual content policy bans explicit content meant for sexual gratification, including pornography, sexual acts and fetish content; nudity can be allowed with clear educational, documentary, scientific or artistic context. Borderline content is often age-restricted rather than removed. Violations bring warnings and strikes, and pornography – in videos, thumbnails or links – can terminate a channel outright.
Key takeaways
- Explicit content meant for sexual gratification is not allowed – real, dramatized, illustrated, animated, in games or music; posting pornography can lead to channel termination.
- Content that is sexual but not explicit is often age-restricted instead: not visible to viewers under 18 or signed out, and no strike.
- Educational, documentary, scientific and artistic content can show nudity if it is not gratuitous; context in the video, title and description decides.
- Thumbnails, avatars, banners and posts follow the same rules; a pornographic thumbnail can end a channel.
- Google’s Transparency Report counts 137,130 channels removed for nudity and sexual content in Q2 2026.
The YouTube sexual content policy – officially the nudity and sexual content policy – affects far more than adult creators. Fitness coaches, painters, health educators, beauty and fashion channels, ASMR artists and film reviewers all work near its edges. A video can be fine, age-restricted, removed with a strike, or the reason a whole channel disappears. This page explains where those lines are as of October 2026, how thumbnails and links fit in, and how to appeal when YouTube missed the context.
What does YouTube’s sexual content policy prohibit?
YouTube’s sexual content policy prohibits explicit content that is meant to be sexually gratifying. As of October 2026, YouTube says posting pornography may result in content removal or channel termination, and that fetish content will be removed or age-restricted, with violent, graphic or humiliating fetishes generally not allowed. The rules apply to real-world, dramatized, illustrated and animated content, including sex scenes, video games and music, and to videos, descriptions, comments, live streams and audio.
The policy names, among other things:
- genitals, breasts or buttocks – clothed or not – shown for sexual gratification, and nudity or partial nudity meant to gratify;
- pornography, depictions of sexual acts, masturbation, groping or the use of sex toys to gratify viewers;
- non-consensual sexual content and its glorification, and unwanted sexualization such as voyeurism, “upskirting” or leaked nude photos;
- prolonged zooming on intimate areas for gratification, and compilations or playlists that aggregate sexual content;
- clips cut out of non-pornographic films or shows to isolate sexual scenes;
- everyday situations or objects used for sexual gratification, and audio or text describing sexual acts for that purpose.
Any sexual content involving minors falls under the stricter child safety policy; YouTube reports child sexual abuse imagery to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. One more thing to know: as of October 2026 the policy page opens with a paragraph from the impersonation policy – a page error. The nudity rules start below it.
Age restriction, removal or strike: how does YouTube decide?
YouTube age-restricts content that includes nudity or sexual themes but stays below the prohibited list, and removes content that is meant to sexually gratify. An age-restricted video stays online but cannot be watched by anyone who is under 18 or signed out – and it is not a strike. YouTube says it considers, among other factors:
- whether breasts, buttocks or genitals are the focal point of the video;
- whether poses, actions or language are meant to arouse – for example touching, revealing underwear or graphic, lewd talk;
- whether clothing would be unacceptable in public, such as lingerie;
- whether sexual imagery or audio is blurred or masked, and whether it is fleeting or prolonged;
- whether the video invites others into a challenge involving sexual acts.
| Scenario | Typical outcome | What tips the balance |
|---|---|---|
| Workout tutorial in sportswear, camera on the exercise | Usually allowed | Instruction throughout, neutral framing |
| Same workout, close-ups make the body the focal point | Age restriction or removal | Focus and camera work, title and thumbnail |
| Medical or breastfeeding education | Can be allowed as educational | Educational framing; out-of-context clips may fail |
| Figure drawing class or art documentary | Can be allowed as artistic, possibly age-restricted | Artistic purpose clear, not gratuitous |
| Lingerie try-on or suggestive roleplay | Age restriction likely; removal if meant to gratify | Poses, language, focus |
| Compilation of film sex scenes | Removal | Isolating sexual content is named as not allowed |
Where are the limits for fitness, art, education, ASMR and thumbnails?
The limit is the primary purpose: YouTube may allow sexual content and nudity when the main purpose is educational, documentary, scientific or artistic and it is not gratuitous – and context in the video, title and description is how reviewers recognize that purpose. YouTube gives the example of a breast cancer documentary that may show nudity, while clips from the same documentary posted out of context for gratification are not allowed. For films, it says naming the film, director and actors helps establish an artistic context. For adult material in such content, it may also take official third-party ratings into account.
- Fitness and dance: keep the camera on the movement, not on intimate areas; avoid titles and thumbnails that sell the body rather than the workout.
- Art and education: state the purpose in the first seconds and in the description. Context is not a pass to promote explicit content.
- ASMR and roleplay: sensual themes, lingerie and lewd audio are the factors YouTube lists for age restriction or removal. The bigger risk in 2026 has been links – see below and our guide to ASMR channels and terminations.
- Thumbnails and channel art: since a September 2022 update, YouTube has been stricter about sexual imagery in thumbnails, avatars, posts and banners. The thumbnail policy bans nudity including genitals and sexually gratifying imagery; misleading sexual bait is also a misleading metadata problem.
Can a channel be terminated for sexual content without strikes?
Yes. Pornography is one of the examples YouTube gives for a single case of severe abuse, which can end a channel without any prior warning or strike.
“A single case of severe abuse (such as predatory behavior, spam, or pornography)”
YouTube Help, Channel or account terminations, as of October 2026The same applies to what you link to. YouTube’s external links policy lists links to pornography first, and it covers spoken directions and invitations to visit your profile on other sites. In late July 2026, according to 404 Media, Dexerto and Tubefilter, several established ASMR channels were terminated without prior strikes; a YouTube spokesperson said they were removed for linking to content that violates the nudity and sexual content policy. If your channel was removed without any strike history, read our guide to terminations without strikes.
How do you appeal a nudity or sexual content strike?
Appeal by making the purpose visible: what the video teaches or shows, where the context is stated, and why the flagged moment is not meant to gratify.
- Find the flagged elementVideo, thumbnail, description, a comment or a link? The email names the policy and the affected content; the “Channel violations” card in YouTube Studio is where you appeal it.
- Keep everything onlineDeleting the video keeps the strike and ends your right to appeal it.
- Document contextNote the timestamps where you explain the purpose, the description text, credits for film or art material, and how brief the flagged moment is.
- Offer the alternativeIf the content is fine but not for all ages, say so: YouTube’s appeal outcomes include keeping a video online with an age restriction instead of removal.
- Appeal in timeWarnings and strikes: within 6 months, each strike once, via YouTube Studio → “Channel violations” → “Appeal”. Terminated channel: “Begin Review” → “Start Appeal”, within 1 year, with two appeals in that year as of October 2026. Walkthrough: how to appeal a Community Guidelines strike.
Video: [video URL] – removed on [date] under the nudity and sexual content policy The video is a [workout tutorial / art class / health education video / film review]. Its purpose is [educational / artistic]: [one sentence, e.g. “it demonstrates three hip-mobility exercises with spoken instructions throughout”]. The title and description state this context. The moment at [timestamp] is [brief, factual description], lasts [seconds] and is not the focus of the video. If you consider the video unsuitable for all audiences, I ask you to apply an age restriction instead of removing it. Please review the decision and lift the strike.
A termination needs more than this excerpt – especially if links were involved. The Appeal Kit includes reason-specific templates in a short and a long version, the 5-part appeal structure and the 48-hour evidence checklist (€87, one-time, 30-day no-questions refund, and we never ask for your password).
What are your realistic chances?
Your chances are good when the purpose is obvious from the video itself and the flagged moment is brief – and an age restriction may be the realistic best outcome rather than full reinstatement as before. They are weak when the content was produced to be suggestive, when thumbnails sold the body rather than the topic, or when links led to adult platforms. An appeal against a termination for actual pornography has little to stand on – and that is exactly what the policy is for.
An age restriction is not a strike and does not count toward termination. If most of your catalogue is borderline, it is often better to accept age restrictions and adjust future content than to fight every decision.
What should you not do?
- Don’t delete the flagged video before appealing – the strike stays and you lose the appeal.
- Don’t send viewers to an “uncensored” version on another platform, in words or links.
- Don’t re-upload the same content with a blur that leaves the focus unchanged.
- Don’t use suggestive thumbnails to make up for lost reach after an age restriction.
- Don’t open a second channel for the “spicier” content. If the first is restricted or terminated, that is circumvention.
How do you keep sensitive content on the right side of the line?
Decide the purpose of each video before you shoot, and let every element – framing, title, thumbnail, links – serve that purpose.
- State the educational, artistic or documentary purpose in the first seconds and in the description.
- Frame the camera on the activity, not on intimate areas; keep sensitive moments brief.
- Credit films, artworks and sources when you show them.
- Thumbnails: no nudity, no sexualizing poses, no lingerie as the eye-catcher.
- Audit every link, link-in-bio page and “find me on” mention for adult content, at least quarterly.
- Use the channel audit checklist to review the whole catalogue, not just new uploads.
Frequently asked questions
What is YouTube’s sexual content policy?
YouTube’s nudity and sexual content policy prohibits explicit content meant to be sexually gratifying, including pornography, depictions of sexual acts, fetish content for gratification, non-consensual sexual content and leaked intimate images. It applies to real, dramatized, illustrated and animated content, games, music, audio, thumbnails and comments. Nudity can be allowed when the primary purpose is educational, documentary, scientific or artistic and it is not gratuitous.
What is an age-restricted video on YouTube?
An age-restricted video stays on YouTube but cannot be watched by viewers who are under 18 or signed out. YouTube uses age restrictions for content that follows its policies but is not suitable for everyone – for example sexual themes without explicit content. An age restriction is not a strike. A successful strike appeal can also end with an age restriction instead of removal.
Is nudity allowed on YouTube?
Only in limited cases. Nudity meant for sexual gratification is not allowed. Nudity in clearly educational, documentary, scientific or artistic content – a medical explainer, an art documentary, a credited film scene – can be allowed and may be age-restricted. Clips taken out of that context to isolate nudity are not covered by the exception. Thumbnails may not show nudity including genitals at all.
Can a thumbnail get my YouTube channel terminated?
Yes. YouTube’s thumbnail policy says that a pornographic thumbnail can lead to channel termination. Other violating thumbnails – sexual imagery, nudity, sexualizing poses – are removed and can bring a warning or strike. A thumbnail that is only unsuitable for some audiences can be removed or the video age-restricted without a strike, and you can upload a new one.
Why were ASMR channels terminated in 2026?
In late July 2026, several established ASMR channels were terminated without prior strikes, according to 404 Media, Dexerto and Tubefilter. A YouTube spokesperson said they were removed for linking to content that violates the nudity and sexual content policy and that no policy had changed. The emails reportedly cited severe or repeated violations of the sex and nudity policy.
Does the policy apply to animation and video games?
Yes. YouTube applies the nudity and sexual content policy to real-world, dramatized, illustrated and animated content, including sex scenes, video games and music. It also names video game content that has been modded for sexual gratification. Animated or game content is therefore judged by the same question as live footage: is it meant to sexually gratify?
